The iPhone 14 was unveiled at an Apple event in the US with emergency satellite connectivity and car crash detection.
Apple unveiled four new handset versions at its Cupertino headquarters in front of an audience for the first time since the pandemic.
Also introduced was Watch Ultra, a wearable designed for extreme sports.
There was a focus on the next-generation iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the event.
A live presentation from Apple CEO Tim Cook was broadcast from the Steve Jobs theatre at the company’s California campus – but it was entirely prerecorded.
There will be two versions of the iPhone 14: the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus.
The new handsets have the capability of sending an emergency call for help via satellite. As satellites pass overhead, the device will display their location and demonstrate how to view them properly.
Basic messages can be sent within 15 seconds or up to several minutes.
According to CCS Insight’s chief analyst, Ben Wood, the investment in satellite capability cannot be undervalued.
“Apple will likely have spent years creating the infrastructure necessary to transmit emergency messages, including a commercial agreement with satellite provider Globalstar.”
According to tech analyst Paolo Pescatore, the innovation will benefit consumers living in hard-to-reach locales.
He expressed his appreciation for providers’ growing interest in satellite technology – ultimately, reliable and robust connectivity remains a high priority for users.
iPhone 14 camera
According to the company, the 12-megapixel camera employs 49% more low-light sensitivity, improving low-light capture by 49%.
Additionally, the front camera now features autofocus for sharper selfies.
It is estimated that iPhone users have taken more than three trillion photos over the past year, according to Apple.
In the U.S. and the UK, the iPhone 14 starts at $799 and £849, respectively.
iPhone 14 Pro
Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have a pill-shaped cut-out at the top of the screen, which is the biggest change to the design.
iPhone users have complained about the black notch – but now there is a feature called Dynamic Island that can change shape depending on what notifications are received.
Another big change is that the handset can remain on at all times.
There is a lowering of the refresh rate and a dimming of the screen when the phone is not in use.
It is available in a deep purple color, as well as in black, silver, and gold.
Prices for the iPhone 14 Pro start at $999 (US) and £1099 (UK).
